FOR THE AMATEUR

A great place for the beginner to start is Photography Tips.com. This site is filled with good information on composition, lighting and techniques, which are the critical starting points for anyone wishing to take good pictures. Knowing how to properly compose and light your subject, is the difference between shooting a good picture or just a mediocre snapshot.  Another great site is Kodak's top 10 tips for great pictures . I really like this site because it is written in a very clear and easy to understand language.

FOR THE INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHER

For the intermediate photographer or the amateur looking to learn new techniques, Cambridge In Colour is a great web site. Sean McHugh goes into great detail explaining the art of digital photography as well as getting into more advanced topics such as HDR (high dynamic range ), using Photoshop CS2/CS3 and Photo stitching. Be sure to check out his photo gallery  to see his spectacular pictures!
All Things Photography, is another great site for all levels of photographers. It has inspiring and helpful digital photography tips on everyday subjects including Photoshop, (with example photographs), will be of great value to all levels of photographers.

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

You might be thinking why is he covering black and white photography?  Well, some of the best photo shots ever taken are in black and white. Unlike color,  the focal point of a black and white shot is not distracted by the surrounding colors if composed properly. The shot will be filled with great contrast.
There are 4 key elements to shooting black and white:
1. Look for contrast. Contrast in a black and white shot is what gives interest and depth to that shot.
2. Look for correct lighting.  Lighting and contrast compliment each other.  Direct lighting will often add to the contrast of the subject, while side lighting will bring out the texture.
3. Look for shapes and patterns.  Patterns or shapes are sometimes lost in color because the color itself draws attention. In black and white, these patterns come alive.  Black and white shots that rely upon pattern can often take on an abstract quality.
 4. Capture texture.  I’ve already mentioned this above when talking about side lighting.   Revealing the texture of a subject can add a new dimension to an image.  The sidelight does this by creating shadows.
If you haven't tried black and white photography,  give  it a shot.   You will be surprised at the quality of the pictures that you shoot.   For more details on black and white photography, visit the Digital Photography School.  There is a very good book on black and white photography, titled "Advanced Black & White Digital Photography" by Beardsworth,  John David,  paperback.  Under $15.00

TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY
One of the most basic elements of travel photography is being prepared and knowing what to bring. Some important considerations are: lenses, such as wide angle and zoom, accessories such as a tripod for stability, a flash and lens filters.
One of my favorite sites for travel photography is Fodor's. The tips and techniques you will learn  will help you take great travel photos.
Fodor's has a great web site covering all aspects of travel and travel photography. You will find many tips and ideas to make your trip memorable.
Some of the things you will learn are,  digital photography, having the right equipment for your trip, techniques on lighting, composition, exposure and depth of field. Novelty shots such as shooting from the air, at sea, fireworks and night photography will be discussed.  Fodor's also offers ideas on travel destinations and travel books

Alex Morrison of Nature Photography Central says it best:

WINTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Taking pictures in the winter can be very rewarding or very disappointing. There are certain issues that must be dealt with when taking winter pictures: the cold is the number one issue, foggy lenses and underexposed snow scenes.

Picture Correct  has a very good article called "The Beauty Of Winter Photography" by Joanna Gerber. Here you will learn all of the necessary tips and techniques for taking excellent winter photographs and how to avoid some of the problems associated with winter photography. This web site also has many tips and techniques on all apects of photography .  It's well worth the visit.

Another site to explore is Winter Photography Tips, this site has good information on exposure and shutter speed when photographing winter scenes as well as dealing with the cold.
