What is a camera and how does it function?
A camera is a device that catches images. The history of the camera is an interesting one. Its beginnings date back to 1724. The mechanics of the camera has changed very little over the years, but what has changed, is the way the image is captured. The cameras focus and exposure control are very important to the pictures clarity and quality. In some cameras, this is done automatically and in the more expensive cameras it is done by the photographer. The image gallery shows the evolution of the different types of cameras and explains their features and functions.
Digital cameras can be classified into several categories. I'll cover the two most common: the compact digital and the SLR. The compact digital is designed to be small, portable and easy to use. They will generally have an on board flash and may have adjustable controls for different light settings. These cameras are great for the casual photographer and "snapshots".
The digital SLR (digital single lens reflex) is the camera of choice for the professional and advanced amateur photographer. DSLR cameras use a series of mirrors to direct light from the lens through the viewfinder eyepiece. These cameras have the ability to interchange lenses, wide angle, close up, and add filters and more powerful flashes, in addition to all the controls such as aperture and f-stop. These are set by the photographer giving more control over the composition of the photo.
Very simply, one that you can understand and in which you are comfortable using. Look at various types and their features. Do you need all of the features? Do you understand them? If the answer is no, then the camera is not for you. For most of you, the compact digital will be the camera of choice. How many megapixels do I need?
For most of you, 3-4 megapixels are plenty. You will get good quality pictures at a reasonable price. Want great 8x10s and good 11x14s? Go for 5 megapixels but plan on paying more. Six or more megapixels and you better go to the bank! The higher the megapixel number, the better the quality of the picture, but you also need larger memory cards and more disk space to store them.
A basic point- and- shoot, 3 megapixels, can be purchased for around $250.00. Intermediate models, 4 megapixels, can be had for around $350.00. SLRS of 5 megapixels and higher, start at around $700.00 and can cost up to $8000.00. Click here for great prices on digital cameras and accessories.

What is a tripod?
A tripod is a three legged stand that supports, elevates and stabilizes the camera. The tripod is a good piece of equipment to have, as it will help you take better pictures. Tripods range in price from $15 to several hundred dollars. You can purchase a good one for $50 - $75.00. Stay away from the cheap ones, as they are not very sturdy and have limited adjustability.
